Antigravity hills are visual illusions.

چکیده
Antigravity hills, also known as spook hills or magnetic hills, are natural places where cars put into neutral are seen to move uphill on a slightly sloping road, apparently defying the law of gravity. We show that these effects, popularly attributed to gravitational anomalies, are in fact visual illusions. We re-created all the known types of antigravity spots in our laboratory using tabletop models; the number of visible stretches of road, their slant, and the height of the visible horizon were systematically varied in four experiments. We conclude that antigravity-hill effects follow from a misperception of the eye level relative to gravity, caused by the presence of either contextual inclines or a false horizon line.

Processing spatial layout by perception and sensorimotor interaction.
Everyone has the feeling that perception is usually accurate - we apprehend the layout of the world without significant error, and therefore we can interact with it effectively. Several lines of experimentation, however, show that perceived layout is seldom accurate enough to account for the success of visually guided behaviour. A visual world that has more texture on one side, for example, ind...
متن کاملMotorist's vestibular disorientation syndrome.
Six patients are described who experienced difficulty in driving a motor car. Four had illusions that the car was turning, which occurred particularly on open, featureless roads or the brows of hills and caused the driver to stop. All patients had peripheral or central neurootological abnormalities, but the only finding consistent with the directionality of the symptoms was an unpleasantly incr...
متن کامل[Perception of physiological visual illusions by individuals with schizophrenia].
Visual perception by individuals with schizophrenia has not been extensively researched. The focus of this review is the perception of physiological visual illusions by patients with schizophrenia, a differences of perception reported in a small number of studies. Increased or decreased susceptibility of these patients to various illusions seems to be unconnected to the location of origin in th...
متن کاملThe Influence of Visual Illusion on Visually Perceived System and Visually Guided Action System
Visual illusions occur around us all the time, which present in nature and appear when you least expect it. It is well known that visual illusions can have a dramatic effect upon our visual perception of an object’s size and position. However, whether visual illusions have a similar influence on visual guided action or not, it remains the subject of much debate. The purpose of this study is to ...
متن کاملVisual Illusions: An Interesting Tool to Investigate Developmental Dyslexia and Autism Spectrum Disorder
A visual illusion refers to a percept that is different in some aspect from the physical stimulus. Illusions are a powerful non-invasive tool for understanding the neurobiology of vision, telling us, indirectly, how the brain processes visual stimuli. There are some neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by visual deficits. Surprisingly, just a few studies investigated illusory perception i...
